The brief centred on long-term adaptability — accommodating a live-in nanny, enabling future rental potential, or supporting a growing family. The design strategically reorganised the existing footprint to maximise functionality without expanding the building envelope. A former laundry was transformed into a compact kitchenette, while an unused store room became a zen-inspired bathroom. Through considered planning and precise spatial division, the lower level was redefined as a self-contained garden suite — calm, practical and adaptable. While seamlessly integrated with the overall layout of the home, the suite can be discreetly closed off, supporting multi-generational living or independent occupancy when required. Dividing walls were removed and the internal layout was completely reconfigured to create a cohesive and generous home. A light, airy palette — white, bright and timeless — was selected to frame rather than compete with the uninterrupted views of Circular Quay and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Working within the constraints of the existing building presented significant challenges. New slab penetrations were not permitted, requiring wet areas to align precisely with existing drainage points. Service pipes from upper-level apartments were carefully integrated, and ceiling lines were strategically resolved to maximise perceived height within limited slab-to-slab dimensions. Through considered planning, constraints were transformed into opportunities. Half-sunken into the ground, it responds to existing deck levels and terrain, creating a seamless connection with the landscape. The client wanted a compact plunge pool for daily aquatic exercise — small yet deep, thoughtfully positioned to respect the original proportions of the house and garden. A lockable cover is integrated into the design, eliminating the need for a surrounding fence and allowing the pool to feel fully part of the landscape. The project is an alteration and addition to a traditional Montreal terrace, including the opening up of living spaces to the garden and the addition of an airy Master bedroom and bathroom retreat on the second floor. The original floor plan was reconfigured to better connect living, dining, and kitchen areas, creating a more cohesive and flowing home. A light, airy atmosphere was achieved through soft timber finishes, sheer curtains, playful bookshelves, skylights, and subtle ceiling patterns. Laneway homes can provide rental income, accommodate extended family, and contribute to neighbourhood density in a thoughtful way. Many existing laneway houses are poorly planned, cramped, or oddly shaped. This design reimagines the typology with flexibility and future sustainability in mind. The Dunbar laneway house features a main floor with an open-plan living, kitchen, and bedroom layout that connects seamlessly to a private garden. The second floor offers a flexible, airy space that can serve as a home office, artist studio, yoga room, additional bedroom, or rumpus space, adapting to the changing needs of the family.
